Quick answer

What is prep course / preparatory course?

Prep course (preparatory course) is a 1-year IIT bridge program for SC, ST and PwD candidates who cleared the preparatory course cutoff in JEE Advanced but not the regular cutoff. You get a rank with P (e.g. 145P), may get a preparatory seat in JoSAA, study at a host IIT for one year, then join B.Tech directly.

Preparatory course cutoff 2025: min 1 mark per subject + 18 marks total (out of 360). 2024: 3 marks/subject + 31 total.

Section 1

What is the IIT Preparatory Course in JoSAA?

🎓 सरल भाषा में: Preparatory Course (Prep Course) ek saal ka full-time residential program hai jo IITs SC, ST aur PwD candidates ko deti hain — un students ke liye jo regular relaxed cutoff clear nahi kar paaye, lekin ek aur neeche wala "preparatory cutoff" clear kar liya ho.

The IIT Preparatory Course is a unique one-year bridge program offered by all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology through JoSAA. It gives reserved-category students who almost qualified in JEE Advanced a structured academic foundation before entering the rigorous first-year B.Tech curriculum.

IITs Offer Prep Seats
ℹ️
Key point: Preparatory seats are created only when regular SC/ST/PwD seats remain vacant after standard JoSAA rounds. It is a bridge mechanism — not a separate admission quota for General or OBC candidates.
Section 2

How the Preparatory Course Works — Step by Step

1

Seat Allocation in JoSAA

When reserved seats for SC, ST or PwD remain vacant after regular rounds, they convert to "Preparatory Seats". Eligible candidates with a preparatory rank fill choices and are allotted by preparatory merit.

2

The Prep Year (1 Academic Year)

You live in an IIT hostel and attend classes focusing on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Communication — building fundamentals before engineering begins.

3

Evaluation & Testing

Periodic quizzes, lab practicals, mid-semester and end-semester written exams — exactly like a standard academic program. Pass criteria: 40% in PCM, 30% in English.

4

Direct B.Tech Admission

Upon passing, you join the first year of your originally allotted B.Tech branch at your allotted IIT — without retaking JEE Advanced. Prep-year grades do not count toward B.Tech GPA.

⚠️
Pass/Fail rule: Failing the preparatory year means losing the allotted B.Tech seat entirely. It is strictly a qualifying year — not a formality.
💰
Financial benefits: Full hostel fee waiver, free basic mess facilities, and a modest monthly pocket allowance are typically provided during the prep year.
Section 3

Who is Eligible for the Preparatory Course?

Eligibility teen cheezon par depend karti hai: Category, JEE Advanced preparatory cutoff, aur Class 12th criteria. General, Gen-EWS aur OBC-NCL candidates eligible nahi hain.

1. Category

  • Scheduled Caste (SC)
  • Scheduled Tribe (ST)
  • Persons with Disabilities (PwD) — any category

2. JEE Advanced Cutoff Window

Missed regular cutoff but cleared the lower preparatory cutoff → receive Rank 145P on scorecard.

3. Class 12 Criteria

PCM compulsory. At least 65% aggregate (relaxed from 75%) OR top 20 percentile in your board.

Automatic Disqualification

🚫
  • You accepted a preparatory seat in a previous year (one shot only)
  • You were ever admitted to any IIT academic program in the past
Section 4

Which IITs Offer Prep Courses? Host IIT Zones

All 23 IITs offer preparatory seats — but classes run at zone Host IITs, which may differ from your allotted B.Tech institute.

Bombay Zone — Host: IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay, IIT Dharwad, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Goa
Delhi Zone — Host: IIT Delhi / IIT Jammu
IIT Delhi, IIT Jammu, IIT Jodhpur
Guwahati Zone — Host: IIT Guwahati
IIT Guwahati, IIT Patna
Kanpur Zone — Host: IIT Kanpur
IIT Kanpur, IIT (BHU) Varanasi
Kharagpur Zone — Host: IIT Kharagpur / IIT Bhilai
IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Bhilai, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
Madras Zone — Host: IIT Madras / IIT Hyderabad
IIT Madras, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Palakkad, IIT Tirupati
Roorkee Zone — Host: IIT Roorkee / IIT Mandi
IIT Roorkee, IIT Mandi, IIT Ropar
Example: Agar aapko IIT Dharwad mein CS preparatory seat milti hai (Bombay Zone), to ek saal IIT Bombay mein padhenge. Pass karne ke baad IIT Dharwad join karenge. Allotment letter mein Allotted Institute aur Reporting/Host Institute dono clearly likhe hote hain.
Section 5

Do You Spend 5 Years at IIT?

Yes — preparatory route = 1 prep year + 4 B.Tech years = 5 years total. For a 5-year integrated dual degree, it becomes 6 years.

💡
The extra year is a stepping stone ensuring you can match IIT academic pace once core engineering classes begin. Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) + prep = 6 years on campus.
Section 6

Preparatory Rank Merit Criteria

Preparatory cutoffs are set at roughly half of regular SC/ST qualifying criteria — both subject-wise minimums and overall aggregate.

⚠️
Being on the preparatory rank list does not guarantee a seat — you must fill JoSAA choices. Vacant reserved seats convert to preparatory seats; unallotted seats are never given to General/OBC.
Section 7

JoSAA 2025 Preparatory Allotment Rank Ranges

Ranks with P suffix = Preparatory Merit List. Top branches at old IITs rarely reach preparatory ranks.

Section 8

Branch Strategy for Preparatory Rank Holders

Mindset shift: Preparatory seats sirf wahan bante hain jahan regular reserved seats khali reh gayi. CS/ECE at old IITs almost kabhi preparatory tak nahi aate. IIT tag pehle, branch baad mein.

Strategy 1: IIT Tag First ⭐ Recommended

Target niche branches at older IITs:

  • Mining, Metallurgical, Ceramic, Applied Geology
  • IIT BHU, IIT ISM Dhanbad, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee

70%+ students in non-tech branches learn coding independently and get software placements.

Strategy 2: Circuital Branch Route

Lower college tier, keep branch:

  • EE, ME, IT at newer IITs (Bhilai, Jammu, Dharwad, Goa)
  • More seats roll over to preparatory pool

Critical Choice-Filling Rules

1️⃣
Fill 40–50+ choices minimum — not 5–10 dream options. Limited lists get skipped by the algorithm.
2️⃣
Branch change trap: Prep year does NOT count for branch change. You can apply only at end of actual B.Tech Year 1. IIT Bombay, Madras, Hyderabad, Jammu have abolished branch change.
3️⃣
Prioritize degree-granting IIT quality over geography — you'll spend prep year at the zone host IIT anyway.
Section 9

In Which JoSAA Round Can You Get a Prep Seat?

Preparatory seats are allocated across all standard JoSAA rounds (Rounds 1–5/6) — no separate special round exists.

Round 1 — Strictest Cutoffs

Highest preparatory ranks (1P–500P) secure seats. Rank 3,000P+ may see "No Seat Allotted" — normal.

Middle Rounds — Cascade Effect

Withdrawals, document failures, NIT/state college choices → vacant seats convert to preparatory → cutoffs drop.

Final Round — Best Chance 🎯

Maximum preparatory seats distributed. Ranks impossible in Round 1 often get allotments here.

🏆
Golden Rule — Always Float! Never Freeze unless 100% satisfied. Float locks your seat as safety while keeping you eligible for upgrades in later rounds.

Section 12

Can You Get CS or ECE via Preparatory Rank?

🚫
Via preparatory rank at IITs: CS and ECE are nearly impossible. These seats fill in regular rounds and never spill to preparatory pool.

For context — regular (non-preparatory) IIT cutoffs for CS/ECE:

IIT TierCS Closing (Regular)ECE/EE Closing (Regular)
Top (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur)AIR < 300 (Gen)~800–1,000
Mid (Indore, Gandhinagar, BHU)800–2,000~3,500
Newer (Palakkad, Jammu, Dharwad, Bhilai)Up to ~7,500Higher ranks

If you hold a regular SC/ST rank (no P), CS/ECE at newer IITs or top NITs/IIITs is realistic — but strategy differs completely from preparatory rank holders.

Section 13

Smart Move — Action Checklist

Scenario A: Preparatory Rank (500P, 1200P…)

  • ✅ Cross CS/ECE off IIT list — chase IIT tag
  • ✅ Target Mining, Metallurgy, Ceramic, Geology at old IITs
  • ✅ Fill 50+ choices down to newer IIT safety nets
  • ✅ Learn coding independently once inside IIT
  • ✅ Always Float in JoSAA rounds

Scenario B: Regular Rank (no P)

  • ✅ Old IITs → compromise branch (Mech, Chem, Civil)
  • ✅ CS/ECE → 3rd-gen IITs or top NITs/IIITs
  • ✅ Float constantly — never Freeze early
  • ✅ Check seat matrix for expanded CS/ECE capacities
Section 14

Hidden Facts Nobody Talks About

🏛️ Origin — Mid-1990s "Zero-Year" Compromise

Reserved seats stayed empty despite lowered cutoffs. Government pushed IITs to lower thresholds further; IIT Directors resisted — arguing unprepared students would drop out. The compromise: a bridge year to train students who almost made it, without lowering first-year entry standards.

🏠 Same Hostels as Top Rankers

Prep students live in regular first-year hostels (e.g. Hostels 15 & 16 at IIT Bombay) alongside CRL top-rankers — intentional cultural and academic exchange from day one.

📚 Professor Autonomy on Curriculum

Prep syllabus is flexible — some professors teach advanced JEE concepts; others jump to first-year calculus and mechanics for a head start.

🗣️ English — The Hidden Filter

Academic struggles often stem from language barriers, not intelligence. The prep year doubles as English immersion — entire lecture ecosystem is in English.

✨ Grace Marks Protocol

Pass/fail is strict (40% PCM, 30% English), but if you marginally fail exactly one subject, the academic senate can grant up to 5% grace marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prep course is the short form of preparatory course — a one-year IIT program for SC, ST and PwD students who cleared the preparatory cutoff in JEE Advanced. Same as preparatory course, zero-year, or prep year.
The IIT Preparatory Course is a one-year residential bridge at an IIT. Reserved seats that stay vacant after regular JoSAA rounds become preparatory seats. You study fundamentals, pass exams, then enter B.Tech first year at your allotted IIT.
It is the lower JEE Advanced pass line for prep eligibility — about 5.14% of total marks (half of regular SC/ST cutoff). 2025: 1 mark/subject + 18 total. 2024: 3 marks/subject + 31 total. Clearing it gives preparatory rank (P) on your scorecard.
Preparatory course ek saal ka IIT bridge program hai jo SC, ST aur PwD candidates ke liye hai. JEE Advanced mein preparatory cutoff clear karne ke baad JoSAA mein preparatory seat mil sakti hai. Pass karne par seedha B.Tech first year.
Scorecard par rank ke saath P (jaise 145P) ka matlab hai aap preparatory merit list mein hain — regular cutoff clear nahi hua lekin preparatory cutoff clear ho gaya.
Nahi. Prep year strictly pass/fail hai aur grades final B.Tech GPA mein include nahi hote. Fail hone par allotted seat chali jaati hai.
JAB resources manage karne ke liye 7 zones banata hai. Har zone mein ek ya do host IITs classes conduct karti hain. B.Tech degree aapke originally allotted IIT se milegi.
Final round mein sabse zyada preparatory seats allot hoti hain kyunki jo bhi reserved seat khali rehti hai woh preparatory seat ban jaati hai. Isliye Float karna zaroori hai.
