Quick answer
What is prep course / preparatory course?
Prep course (preparatory course) is a 1-year IIT bridge program for SC, ST and PwD candidates who cleared the preparatory course cutoff in JEE Advanced but not the regular cutoff. You get a rank with P (e.g. 145P), may get a preparatory seat in JoSAA, study at a host IIT for one year, then join B.Tech directly.
Preparatory course cutoff 2025: min 1 mark per subject + 18 marks total (out of 360). 2024: 3 marks/subject + 31 total.
What is the IIT Preparatory Course in JoSAA?
The IIT Preparatory Course is a unique one-year bridge program offered by all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology through JoSAA. It gives reserved-category students who almost qualified in JEE Advanced a structured academic foundation before entering the rigorous first-year B.Tech curriculum.
How the Preparatory Course Works — Step by Step
Seat Allocation in JoSAA
When reserved seats for SC, ST or PwD remain vacant after regular rounds, they convert to "Preparatory Seats". Eligible candidates with a preparatory rank fill choices and are allotted by preparatory merit.
The Prep Year (1 Academic Year)
You live in an IIT hostel and attend classes focusing on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Communication — building fundamentals before engineering begins.
Evaluation & Testing
Periodic quizzes, lab practicals, mid-semester and end-semester written exams — exactly like a standard academic program. Pass criteria: 40% in PCM, 30% in English.
Direct B.Tech Admission
Upon passing, you join the first year of your originally allotted B.Tech branch at your allotted IIT — without retaking JEE Advanced. Prep-year grades do not count toward B.Tech GPA.
Who is Eligible for the Preparatory Course?
1. Category
- Scheduled Caste (SC)
- Scheduled Tribe (ST)
- Persons with Disabilities (PwD) — any category
2. JEE Advanced Cutoff Window
Missed regular cutoff but cleared the lower preparatory cutoff → receive Rank 145P on scorecard.
3. Class 12 Criteria
PCM compulsory. At least 65% aggregate (relaxed from 75%) OR top 20 percentile in your board.
Automatic Disqualification
- You accepted a preparatory seat in a previous year (one shot only)
- You were ever admitted to any IIT academic program in the past
Which IITs Offer Prep Courses? Host IIT Zones
All 23 IITs offer preparatory seats — but classes run at zone Host IITs, which may differ from your allotted B.Tech institute.
Do You Spend 5 Years at IIT?
Yes — preparatory route = 1 prep year + 4 B.Tech years = 5 years total. For a 5-year integrated dual degree, it becomes 6 years.
Preparatory Rank Merit Criteria
Preparatory cutoffs are set at roughly half of regular SC/ST qualifying criteria — both subject-wise minimums and overall aggregate.
| Metric | Regular SC/ST Cutoff | Preparatory Cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum marks per subject | ~2.9% of subject marks | ~1.45% of subject marks |
| Minimum overall aggregate | ~10.2% of total marks | 5.14% of total marks |

JEE Advanced 2025
Min 1 mark per subject (Phy/Chem/Math)
Min aggregate: 18 marks
JEE Advanced 2024

JoSAA 2025 Preparatory Allotment Rank Ranges
Ranks with P suffix = Preparatory Merit List. Top branches at old IITs rarely reach preparatory ranks.
| Category | Typical Rank Range (2025) | Common Institutes |
|---|---|---|
| SC | 1P – 5,500P+ | IIT Bhilai, IIT Jammu, IIT Dharwad, IIT Goa |
| ST | 1P – 2,000P+ | Varies by vacant seat pool across zones |
| IIT Tier | Typical Branches | Est. Prep Rank Range |
|---|---|---|
| Top-Tier (BHU, ISM Dhanbad) | Ceramic, Mining, Applied Geology, Metallurgy | 1P – 1,500P |
| Mid-Tier (Jodhpur, Ropar, Patna) | Bio-Eng, Chemical, Materials, Civil | 1,500P – 3,500P |
| Newer IITs (Bhilai, Jammu, Dharwad, Palakkad) | Mechanical, Civil, Environmental | 3,500P – 5,500P+ |

Branch Strategy for Preparatory Rank Holders
Strategy 1: IIT Tag First ⭐ Recommended
Target niche branches at older IITs:
- Mining, Metallurgical, Ceramic, Applied Geology
- IIT BHU, IIT ISM Dhanbad, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee
70%+ students in non-tech branches learn coding independently and get software placements.
Strategy 2: Circuital Branch Route
Lower college tier, keep branch:
- EE, ME, IT at newer IITs (Bhilai, Jammu, Dharwad, Goa)
- More seats roll over to preparatory pool
Critical Choice-Filling Rules
In Which JoSAA Round Can You Get a Prep Seat?
Preparatory seats are allocated across all standard JoSAA rounds (Rounds 1–5/6) — no separate special round exists.
Round 1 — Strictest Cutoffs
Highest preparatory ranks (1P–500P) secure seats. Rank 3,000P+ may see "No Seat Allotted" — normal.
Middle Rounds — Cascade Effect
Withdrawals, document failures, NIT/state college choices → vacant seats convert to preparatory → cutoffs drop.
Final Round — Best Chance 🎯
Maximum preparatory seats distributed. Ranks impossible in Round 1 often get allotments here.

Can You Get CS or ECE via Preparatory Rank?
For context — regular (non-preparatory) IIT cutoffs for CS/ECE:
| IIT Tier | CS Closing (Regular) | ECE/EE Closing (Regular) |
|---|---|---|
| Top (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur) | AIR < 300 (Gen) | ~800–1,000 |
| Mid (Indore, Gandhinagar, BHU) | 800–2,000 | ~3,500 |
| Newer (Palakkad, Jammu, Dharwad, Bhilai) | Up to ~7,500 | Higher ranks |
If you hold a regular SC/ST rank (no P), CS/ECE at newer IITs or top NITs/IIITs is realistic — but strategy differs completely from preparatory rank holders.
Smart Move — Action Checklist
Scenario A: Preparatory Rank (500P, 1200P…)
- ✅ Cross CS/ECE off IIT list — chase IIT tag
- ✅ Target Mining, Metallurgy, Ceramic, Geology at old IITs
- ✅ Fill 50+ choices down to newer IIT safety nets
- ✅ Learn coding independently once inside IIT
- ✅ Always Float in JoSAA rounds
Scenario B: Regular Rank (no P)
- ✅ Old IITs → compromise branch (Mech, Chem, Civil)
- ✅ CS/ECE → 3rd-gen IITs or top NITs/IIITs
- ✅ Float constantly — never Freeze early
- ✅ Check seat matrix for expanded CS/ECE capacities
